What better way to finish off our time in Bolivia with a trip to the famous salt plains. We had planned originally to go from Tupiza which everyone had recommended to us - and I believe still it is the better trip. However it was cheaper to go from Uyuni so in the end we went for the cheapscate option.
We still had a fab time though. Heading to Uyuni by public bus from Potosi took about four hours. We had been told Uyuni was a nothing town (a bit of a dump) and were not let down on arrival. Even though we had arrived late in the night we decided to get on a tour the next morning rather than stay in the town.
There is no shortage of operators and we booked in the next morning for a three day tour. There was six of us in our jeep, us, an American, Italian, Brasilian and Bolivian as well as the driver and his young son.
On day one we visited the salt flats themselves as well a ´steam train graveyard´. Of course we got to try our hand at taking all the funky photos you are used to seeing from people that visit the salt flats. We even got our santa hats on so we could get some fun shots for Christmas cards for the family.
The flats were amazing and we spent the first night just contemplating the natural wonder we had seen over dinner and watched the sun go down.
Over the next two days we travelled across more stunning terrain taking in a number of lagoons, blue, red and green to name a view, watching the flamingoes on them, enjoying the hot springs and visiting the volcanic gueysers. Here are some more photos of the trip.
Now its time to leave Boliva and head into Argentina.
