Kaikora

Ok so I realise it has been a while since our last post. Don't blame us, blame NZ for its lack of Wifi access. Sorry New Zealanders - you have a lovely country but its true.

We were in Kaikora about three weeks ago now. Having been warned it wasn't that nice we weren't expecting much, only to be pleasantly surprised. The town is a little tourist hot spot with nice walks, beach and sea food restaurants.

Our time spent there was mostly about chilling out and getting prepared for our soon to start campervan adventure but we still managed to gather a few favourite things.

Favourite activity No. 1- Swimming with Dolphins

Yes we had already done this in Bay of Islands but as Mike hadn't really got to swim with them there and I barely did, we decided to try again.

This time we would be swimming with dusky dolphins, a much smaller breed. We went out at 8.00am fingers crossed.

We need not have worried. Pretty quickly we spotted the dorsal fins, they were everywhere.

We got in the water four times for what we both agree was probably one of the most memorable experiences of our lives. Surrounded by 400- 500 dolphins we swam, sang and played with them for about an hour. Fantastic.

Favourite activity No.2 - Sighting of an Orca

During our dolphin trip the guides had mentioned that some killer whales had been sighted in the area and to keep an eye out (I'm not sure if that should have worried me more as I was about to get in the water!)

After our last swim with the dolphin we headed home but kept a sharp eye out and luckily, very luckily I am told as such a close sighting is very rare, we found a lone adult male as he surfaced.

Favourite activity No.3 - Fresh fish

This may seems like an odd favourite but after five months of very little fish in South America it was lovely to be able to get hold of locally caught, fresh fish and seafood at decent prices.

In Kaikora it is the main dish at all restaurants, I particularly enjoyed a seafood chowder - yum as well as easy to buy at local fish shops.

After a relaxed few days in Kaikora we caught the bus to Christchurch for an overnight stay to pick up our camper.
