Ok where to start...
12 days in BA, Christmas and New Year included. In summary lots of steak, lots of wine, lots of people equals lots of fun.
No stranger to being away from home at Christmas (this was our third time) we had decided some time ago to hire an apartment with friends in the trendy part of BA, Palermo, rather than stay in a hostel. We had planned to share the apartment with Neil but ended up picking a lot more people along the way including Kat and Kate from Cafayate, Anne from Colca Canyon and one of Neil's friend's Shaz.
Somehow things turned into Mike being dad to my mum and Neil (well I'm not sure if he played the role of dutiful son or drunken, lewdy uncle - maybe both) but anyway we were all left to organise Christmas and of course cook up a traditional Christmas dinner.
As we arrived in BA on the 22nd December that left us two days to find turkey, pigs in blankets, stuffing, gravy and all the usual trimmings. After two fairly stressful shopping trips we managed to find all we needed and more to make a home-away-from-home Christmas shindig. Plus I got to learn how to make homemade stuffing and gravy - I`ll never go back! Anyway the day started sensibly with scrambled egg and champagne, followed by smoked salmon and cream cheese and then a lovely roast dinner.
It ended like this...
Boxing day followed much the same way. More photos like this to feature heavily on facebook! :)
After Christmas Mike and I started exploring the city. As we were a little weary and hungover still from Christmas we decided that the best way to start was with an open top tour city bus around all the major sites to get our bearings. It also meant we didn´t have to do that much.
We saw all the main sites, Casa Rosada, Congresso, Teatro Colon, Boca Stadium (unfortunately there were no games to go and see as the season had ended), The Obelisk etc. Our favourite place on the tour though was the Floralis Generica sculpture and Palermo parks. If you ever go to BA it is easy to bypass these in favour of the the more classic sites but I would definately recommend that you don´t skip them.
Aside from the bus tour we couldn´t miss seeing Evita´s grave in Recoleta cemetery and having a drink in the Plaza, trawling San Telmo market on Sunday to see if we could pick up any bargains (I bought some jewellery - of course) and watching Tango in the Caminito in Boca. These were our favourite days out.
The rest of our time, mainly evenings, were spent eating and drinking with friends. We visited a couple of famous steak restaurants in Palermo including La Cabrera. Food was yummy.
As you may have gathered there really is too much to say about our time in Buenos Aires. Hopefully our pictures give you a glimpse. More to follow on facebook.
Until next time Buenos Aires we salute you as our very favourite city on the trip so far.
