On our first night we met up with two girls, Kate from the UK and Kat from Germany for dinner (they had been on our bus and we got chatting) and then proceeded to spend most of the next few days with them (and a whole host of waifs and stray animals) checking out the numerous bodegas and wineries in the area.
Day one involved trying to fit in visits to as many bodegas as possible. No mean feat when you have a husband still on crutches and quite a lot of walking and drinking involved. We managed well though and picked up some more friends on the way, namely Dave, a stray dog who followed us around the whole day - much to the disappointment of every winery who tried to chase him out.
We refreshed our memories on how wine was made with various tours and more importantly got to try lots of it. This may have hindered our judgement as we thought it wise to a) leave the last winery which was a good hour walk away from the town without a taxi with a man on crutches, in the hope to stop off at other wineries on the way back (all were closed) or flag a taxi down on the way (it was a dirt road in the middle of nowhere). B) We also deemed it wise to try wine ice cream on our return - not very nice although funnily enough it does grow on you, albeit it the alcohol content rather than the taste.
C) The pinnacle though was spending the evening in a local parrilla drinking yet more wine (by now by the jug) waiting for our steak to be cooked (damn eating late in Argentina we needed sustenance) and slyly hiding Dave under our table feeding him scraps and hoping the waiters didn´t notice.
A great day in all, brought to an abrupt end on our walk home when Dave was kidnapped. We were all minding our business when someone, claiming to be Dave´s owner, came out of nowhere and bundled him into the back of a car. I had my suspicions and we never saw him since :(. It was quite traumatic.
Day two of wineries passed much the same as day one, just more wine. We did also stop by a cheese farm (sadly no wine - missed opportunity I think) and learnt a lot about goats cheese, saw a lot of goats!
While in Cafayate Mike and I also celebrated our three year wedding anniversary so took a day out from the wine to kick back by ourselves in a nice hotel (rather than hostel) with pool.
We had a fab day - thanks to all the well-wishers. Mike surprised me with a home-cooked asado in the evening which was yummy , especially as we had the whole hotel gardens to ourselves.
